Go West 2011

Our recent trip down to southern California and Arizona was inspiring and fun!

There is so much great architecture out that way. From SoCal's beach front Googie
buildings, to LA's modern landscape to Arizona's old west, we took it all in, and came back inspired.

We traveled to Huntington Beach for the RTC conference, where we gave a presentation on digital fabrication and the processes we have created in-house to realize a workflow from design to fabrication. The conference was great. Lots of very knowledgeable people, great classes and a small enough venu that we were able to talk and meet many great new people.

Huntington beach is literally 'Surf City USA'… where all those cool guys were surfing in the 60's. Now it's a cute resort town with beautiful views, so the conference location was great!

Here is Jillian, enjoying those said views…
IMG_5220

From there we traveled down to San Diego, going along the shore past Laguna Beach. This area of CA is filled with old Googie buildings. We love it!
This enormous Googie structure is an upscale clothing store.

Just look at that awesome light!

IMG_5232

Continuing South through Laguna Beach we heard tale of an amazingly decorated Tiki Bar. Turns out it's once famed interior has been renovated, so it is not as impressive as it was years ago. They do, however, have a great Tiki mug you can get. Which of course, we did. Love the menu graphics too!

Onto San Diego where the SoCal Googie architecture does not stop.
From decorative shade walls...

To liquor stores. The Googie is everywhere!

And then further south even more to the Salton Sea, past Palm Springs and into the dessert where this forgotten town lends its self to amazing photo ops.

Parts of the Salton Sea are slowly sinking into the ground. Abandoned trailers from another time.

IMG_0728.jpg

Investigating that area further you will find outsider art environments that blow your mind, and expand your imagination. You suddenly realize how many ways there are to live in this world.

Cruzing back home, we make a stop in LA, to soak in more SoCal art and culture.
Culver City gives us huge awesome murrals where ever we seem to turn...

And fun ideas with modern arcitecture.

And of course, the Bruce Goff-designed Pavilion for Japanese Art, which is such an amazing building, designed to hold japanese calligraphy paintings.

We return to the Bay Area, happy to be home in our temperate weather, and fully inspired from the architecture all around us.

American Steel Party - SAND!

About two weekends ago we went to the American Steel SAND by the TON party. So I apologize for the tardiness of this post... but I'm just getting the photos online now, so that will stand as my excuse. First off... American Steel is an amazing warehouse for all your large scale art storage and fabrication needs. If you have needs like that, you should check them out! The Sand by the Ton party was awesome and literally had tons of sand on the ground. They even made these really cool sand sculptures: IMG_7647

IMG_7645 There were many, many stages with many shows... but one of the best shows there was put on, as always, by the Boiler Bar crew. A vaudeville variety show with great acts. Like crazy fan dancing!

And cans on heads!

There were beautiful damsels serving beer

New Orleans Halloween

IMG_4901

I love New Orleans. The history, architecture, culture, art, and food are simply stunning. I honestly believe that you can't really understand this great land of ours without at least visiting once. For when you're in New Orleans, you see that the very melting-pot ideas that founded America, as well as all it's pain and troubles therein, were here well before we were even a glimmer of a nation.

Squirrel Table Photo Contest Winners!

We saw them on desks. We saw them on lawns. We even saw them on a car. But by far the best was still the one where it was taped to a rock in the wilds of remote Australia:

Wilds of the outback!

A big thanks goes out to Clinton & Meech, who will be receiving a real Squirrel Table of their very own shortly (well, shortly being how long it takes to get to the outback)! Thanks everyone for the pictures!

Squirrel Table Photo Contest Update - Furthest Photo Yet!

We'd like to give a big hearty thanks to Clinton & Meech for this photo of a downloadable Squirrel Table in the wilds of Meekatharra, Western Australia!

We're back from Oklahoma!

Yup. We are back from our week long trip to Oklahoma. Why did we go there? That is the first question everyone has asked us. Why would you go to Oklahoma? I guess that question comes quickly to mind as Oklahoma is not really thought of as a "place to go". We asked our friend COOP what we should see while there, as he grew up in that state. He replied "NOTHING. There is NOTHING there." Well, we had already bought the plane tickets, and we were heading out there to visit some family, some possible business relations, and to go to a wedding. There was no turning back. So we set out to prove COOP wrong. Nothing you say? What about Hugo, OK. -- Circus city USA?!

The Crucible's Fire Arts Festival

Being just down the street from The Crucible , we have been watching them set up for this year's Fire Arts Festival for the past month. More and more stuff started to go up in that lot across from their building, and this year we finally got the chance to go and check it out.

American Flat mill is being demolished by the BLM

The old American Flat mill, an abandoned mill that once processed gold and silver ore about four miles out of Carson City has been abandoned for years, and is in the process of being demolished by the BLM.

American Flat

I first went there in 2001. It was an amazingly scenic place as the buildings, by that point, were just shells of what they once were, being reclaimed by the surrounding vegetation. The apparent numbers of visitors that had come through was seen through the years of graffiti coverage on almost every surface. Burned out shells of cars that had been a night's entertainment for some forgotten squatters, the countless beer cans and squatter encampments. American Flat Of course, all of these things that made it so wonderful are the same reasons it is being torn down.

American Flat

The American Flat is being completely demolished into the ground. The Steel and what ever else can be reclaimed will be hauled out. Every thing else will be buried, soil samples taken, and re-vegetation planting will begin. In a few years, it will look like it never existed. An area that had mining history dating back to 1859 will disappear. Though, understandably..... it was not a safe place. And with very easy access.

American Flat

American Flat The place was huge too. 45 acres of enormous buildings. Some as tall as 60 ft. Huge areas open to the sky and bowl shaped, used at some point for the refinery. Tunnels everywhere. Underground tunnels that traveled the area beneath the facility. And graffiti everywhere. Graffiti and puddles of water and plants determined to get in.

American Flat It was one of the most photogenic places i have ever been. So in memory of that beautiful place, I have uploaded all my photos from that trip to Flickr here .

Enjoy the photos. Bye Bye American Flat. I'm glad I saw you when I did.

Last Leg

The last leg of our trip was Los Angeles. We spent 3 days there- then thankfully zoomed home sweet home. A quick overview of our time in LA. Or at least, this is how quick it felt.......

We went to Machine Project where we saw Mister Jalopy give a talk on some of the projects he has been working on. He spent part of his talk speaking on the merits of Custom Vans, which of course no sane person can argue with, but now has Jeffrey even more convinced that we need one. Thanx for that Mr. J.

After the talk, we hung out with him and Coop and Coop's wife Ruth, all really nice, funny, easy going people. We had a blast. Got to see Coop's studio, and looked at some stencils we are cutting for him out of Aluminum.

Vegas, Day 5

We are still here in Vegas, on our last day, and frankly, it's about time! Jeffrey has given all of his three talks. And luckily only one of them was strewn with technical difficulties including, but not limited to, the light jazz that started playing from the hotel speakers halfway through his talk. That talk seemed to take all the bad luck, as his others went seamlessly, and he received praise from the attendees on all three of the presentations.

All of his talks were taped, so you can watch them by logging onto the AU Online site.

We have been put up at The Venetian, with it's plush accomidations and amazingly friendly service. The interior design of this place is amazing.

venetian

This tower here has a long hallway flanked on either side with gas wall sconces. The center of this hallway is a reception area with an amazing ceiling and chandelier. There is so much security here, you have to have a room key to go anywhere in this hotel. Luckily, we did.

venetian

We've decided that is the ceilings and lighting fixtures that really hold the personality of a vegas casino- as eye level and below are typically filled with slot machines and a multicolored carpet to hide stains.

venetian

The Venetian has a pool that was still open while we were here, even though the temperature high was in the low 50's. I went swimming, and it was *WONDERFUL* as they keep the pool at a constant 85 degrees! And I had it all to myself, as more rational people than I figured it was too cold to be swimming.

venetian
They give you heated towels as you are on your way to the pool.

venetian

The other day I saw someone vacuuming this lawn. So today I took a closer look at it.

venetian grass

This is by far the nicest and softest, and most likely the most expensive astroturf you can find. I want some for my livingroom!

venetian

Even the exit signs are fancy at The Venetian.

room

Now onto our room... We had 35 people in here on Tuesday night. I'll say it again..... 35 people in our hotel room at one time, and it wasnt even tight! I think this room is larger than our space in Oakland.

makeup

The bathroom has it's own makeup table, as well as a separate bath tub, a shower with glass walls, two sinks, and a separate room for the toilet. I could live here. If only it weren't in Vegas!

BWC Western Tour Extraordinaire

We are currently in the middle of a 2 week long road trip that began with ThanksGiving dinner in Carson City, NV with the folks.

Currently in Las Vegas, where we are presenting at the Autodesk University Conference. And at the end of the week will will be heading to Los Angeles to meet up with some prospective clients.

On our way to Vegas we stopped at the base of Mt. Whitney, touring through little mountain towns that have not been updated since the 50's..... especially the signage.....

mt. whitney

mmmmmm...... signage....

Mt. Whitney is the highest mountain in the continental united states. So, of course we had to continue on through Death Valley, and see the lowest point too! Mt Whitney gets 14,000 ft and some chage in it's height, while Death Valley goes to 282 ft below sea level. It's EXTREME! Amazing that you can drive from one of these points to the other in one day.

you can see all the photos from our trip here

I dont think that water is gonna last him all the way across the desert. Obviously that man is doomed.

We made it into Vegas Sunday night and had most of the next day to sight see as the first conference activity did not start until later that night.

So, like any good American would, we went to the Atomic Testing Museum.

atomic testing museum

They dont let you take pictures inside the museum, so you will need to go see this one for yourself. Filled with 1950's memorabilia, videos, posters of 1957 Miss Atomic Bomb , and facts. Lots of facts. Though nothing on what the testing in the Nevada desert did to the people working there, or the surrounding wildlife. I guess they forgot about that stuff. We bought a shot glass.

To keep with our 50's theme we went next to The Pinball Hall of Fame

pinball hall of fame

Run by Tim Arnold, this pinball-rific place is 5 rows deep of machine after machine. Most from them from the 50's to the 70's. A few modern ones. One that's all in Spanish. One that's Punk themed and plays new wave music at you. All wonderful.

pinball graphic

I got a little obsessed with the graphics on these old machines and took a ton of photos. You can see them all here.

That's all for now. I will post later on our plush accomodations at the Venetian and more on the Autodesk University Conference.

Back to Vegas!

Art Car Fest 2006

This last weekend was the 10th Anniversary of the Bay Area ArtCarFest - and it was a BLAST! Or at least, when I heard all about it, it really truly sounded like a good time. Great bands played at the San Jose Museum of Art to celebrate, like The Mermen and Meshugga Beach Party . Which were both awesome (or so i hear). And there were over 60 cars there, parked around the museum. This one is a crowd favorite (and one of mine) that comes all the way from Vancouver:

rottin

We did get to see Thursday night at Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley, which was really so cool. It started at sundown and went long into the night. We ate and drank delicious Pyramid Brewery beer and strolled around the 30 or so ArtCars that were on display there. There were some really great cars there, and some from across the country! See photos from Pyramid Brewery's parking lot here.

This is one from a new-on-the-scene ArtCarArtist. He has done a ton with LEDs and neon and it is VERY cool:

don knapp

We spent the next day of the fest making these cool emblems for the Artists.

art car fest swag

We designed the teeshirts and patches too. We fabricated the aluminum emblems in our shop and handed them out on Sunday. It was a really cool project as everyone really liked them, and the artists usually dont get so much cool swag.

Art Car Fest is such a public event, it takes pedestrians and people in traffic by surprise every year. It is the only 4 day long art show that is continuously on display as it goes from venue to venue! Making the emblems was a really cool way to thank the artists for all the work they do over those four days. And they came out way cool!

One more car photo. But you can see all the photos if you click here

Oakland Rocks

We live in Oakland, CA. There is so much cool stuff here.

Recently we went exploring along the shipping ports, and we found a HUGE park. I looked it up on Google maps, wanting to point to it in this post, and all that is shown is a big grey mass. Doing more searching I learned that it is called Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, Located at End of 7TH Street, in Oakland.

The park is made up of rolling grass hills right next to the water. There are telescopes set up at the end of a fake bow of a ship near the water, so you can scan the bay and spy on San Francisco. There is a "goasting" of a huge warehouse building that used to be there. They left the structural support beams so you can see where the building used to stand. There is an observation tower with more telescopes, and..... there is this giant bolt:

Art Car Caravan to Douglas- Last day

Day 6

Today was a day for exploring Douglas. This town was huge in the mining days, from the 2o's to the 50's, and the reminates of urban entertainment are everywhere. There is a theater that fits 1500 people, now in major disrepair with a missing roof, a handful of huge hotels, and a long main street with shops all the way down.
We were able to see the inside of one of the hotels that is now a private residence. Everything was from the 30's and in pristine shape. We also went to see a friend of a friend's house further out in the desert that is made to look like it's built into a rock.
Then we walked to Mexico for diner. Mexico is about 5 blocks from Art Car World.
Back at Art Car World we painted Shalom and Marilyn's car and watched Harrod play with his rooster.
Tomorrow I leave with Philo and Joanne. We're gonna check out some caverns with stalagmites or stalactites or whatever.........
Then we are back in the Bay Area on Saturday.
I think this will be my last post for the Art Car caravan trip.
Thanx for comin along for the ride!

Art Car Caravan to Douglas- Day 5 of 6

Day 5
We woke up at the Shady Dell, ate at the amazing little diner there, did a tour of Bisbee, did a spontaneous Art Car parade through Bisbee, toured the amazing Kate Pearson's studio and postcard room, and then headed off to Douglas.
What? was that too short? Well I'm tired.
Art Car World in Douglas, AZ is fantastic. Harrod, Hunter, Bruce and a crew of others have done an amazing job of fixing up this place, building rooms, putting in bathrooms and taking countless trips to the dump. We had a long late party last night and all stayed up too late. There was a huge diner in the "dining room", a gypsy band and Marilyn signed over her car to Harrod. Now "come play with me" (the name of Marilyn's car) will live here at Art Car World. Every one in the art car community chipped in an created a small piece of fabric that Emily Duffy and Joy Johnston made into an enormous beautiful quilt. And then, to finalize the night, Kelly Lyles began painting on Marilyn and Shalom's new Prius! It's official...... THIS IS ART CAR WORLD.

Art Car Caravan to Douglas- Day 4 of 6

Day 4
Philo woke us all up at 7:30 this morning. Payback will be sweet.
But we woke up at Salvation Mountain, so there was no going back to sleep. Leonard gets up at 5AM and was well ready to give us a tour by the the time we had all coffeed-up. He gave us a tour of the new tree he is building out of telephone poles, big sticks and tires. It's absolutely amazing. Go look at the photos now!!! He has created many small rooms and caverns that wind around the trees he's making. I don't think he will ever stop. And that's a good thing.

I did not mention in yesterday's post that last night Marilyn Dreampeace had some car trouble. Her car would not start when we were still a good 100 miles or more away from Salvation Mountain, but we were able to jump it and make good headway, until the car died again. Luckily we were right in the center of Niland (just 5 minutes from Salvation mountain). So Marilyn and Shalom (who was following her in their Prius) deiced to get a motel in Niland, and try to take the car to a mechanic in the morning.

So here's the part about the Niland Motel:  I'm guessing that Niland has the population of about 150 people. And their local industry is probably Salvation Mountain tourists, and Crystal Meth. Niland is in the middle of the Southern California desert, and it's not on the way to or from anything. Except Salvation Mountain and the Salton Sea. So you can get a pretty good picture of the local motel. Now Marilyn and Shalom just wanted a room quickly so they could charge the car's battery and figure out what was wrong. So Marilyn goes to get a room from the front desk of this hotel, the woman behind the counter looks a little worse for ware and keeps telling Marilyn that they're not done "fixing up" the hotel. Marilyn can't really see where they have started fixing it up - but no matter, she needs a room. So after the woman has a long argument with another apparent "owner" of the hotel as to where the keys to the rooms are, she finally gets a room, gets a key and gives the woman some money for the room - they only accept cash of corse, which the woman puts directly into her pocket.
In the morning Marilyn and Shalom are mostly concerned with getting the car to a mechanic, but cant help notice the scenes happening inside the motel rooms next to theirs,as the doors are wide open and many and the inhabitants are loudly going about their substance abused lives. Directly outside the door to their room, someone had decided to stack tires as they were trying to change a flat by using any replacement tire they could find. Several, it seemed, did not fit and wound up in a pile in front of Marilyn and Shalom's door.
Finally they were able to get the car to a mechanic, whose side business seemed to be cock fighting, and he put a new alternator in the car.
Needless to say, Marilyn and Shalom were happy to get out of there, car fixed. And we were happy too, as they caught right up with the caravan by the end of the day.
Meanwhile, the rest of us took a quick tour of Bombay Beach to see the flooded remains of decaying trailer homes. It looks like the surface of the moon. I love it. I could probably take photos in that area for the rest of my life and not run out of subjects.
We hit the road to Tucson- stopping there at Coleena's house, who was very kind to put us up, then pushed on to Bisbee.
We drove until about 10:30, and finally rolled into Bisbee to a cheering crowd headed by Kate Pearson, who was kind enough to set up a little party for us.
A handful of us got rooms, or I should say trailers, at the Shady Dell, a motel made of vintage trailers all fully decorated to the era. Philo and Joanne got the Tiki Trailer, and I got a little one person Howdy-Doody theme. More photos of those in tomorrows post- when it's light out. We love the Shady Dell!! (see photos)

Art Car Caravan to Douglas- Day 3 of 6

Day 3

Last night we slept in a Motel that had free wi-fi. Woo! But the nights of plush accomodations have ended as we push on into the desert. Tonight we will camp at the famous Salvation Mountain, and awake to see its glory.
This morning we moseyed down to Cabazon to visit the ever-popular Cabazon Dinosaurs. Now owned by a group of creationists - the gift shop inside of the brontosaurus is plastered with creationist propaganda. At least one can take comfort in the fact that people don't read, and are just in the gift shop to buy plastic lizards. I know that's why I'm there.
After Cabazon we headed off to Noah Purifoy's Outdoor Desert Museum, which is the property that Purifoy lived on and created a large assemblage sculpture garden. He had been working on it since 1989 when he moved to the desert from L.A. He passed on in 2003. It is currently classified as a 501c3 nonprofit.  I had never been there before, and it is fantastic. Completely out of the way to anything else you might want to go to, and well worth it. I took lots of photos there as you will see......
Finally our plan to go to Bombay Beach to check out the Salton Sea has been squelched by darkness. There is not much moonlight tonight so we wouldn't be able to see much after dark anyway.
So tonight we are hanging around the campfire with Leonard, the creator of Salvation Mountain. We sing songs, eat, drink, and in the end burn the polar bear that had been the roof ornament of Global Warning (a rental, her "real" art car is in Minnesota). And tonight I have chosen to experience the night, instead of photograph it. Sometimes you can do both, sometimes just one.

Day 2

Woke up in Venture this morning and had breakfast in a cute little 50's dinner across the street from the Child Abuse and Neglect Thrift Store (I kid you not.... that was the name). Then on we drove to Grandma Prisbey's Bottle Village. This was an amazing place. Full of history and woderful art form a very interesting  woman. You can learn more about her and her amazing outlook on life here:

The bottle village was used much as therapy for this woman who built most of the village as a cheap way to build extra housing for her family. We spent quite a time there and I bought a 1' x 1' area plot of land there as a donation. They are having a hard time raising money from the local government to keep the place afloat- though it has been declared a national historical monument. And when you see the photos, you will know why.

Then, after we spent our time at Grandma Pisbey's we headed, unexpectedly to Charles Hunt;s house. A well know Art Car Artist for making "The Grape" - a wonderful artcar that can only be explained through photos. We got a chance to see his other cement art and his new house that he is restoring, complete with cement made to look like wood siding on the out side of the house!

Finally we went to head off to The Watts Towers. We had not planed on going to the grapes, so by the time we got there the museum was closed. That will make it the 3rd time I've been there and I have never made it in time for the museum. Oh well. There's always next time. I love the Watts towers and think they are really beautiful. Someday soon I hope that Grandma Prisbey's Bottle Vilallage can get the funding and protection that Watts towers has gotten.

We got 3 new Art Cars joining us today, Amanda with her Jungle Truck, Scott with his Alien Bug and a group from minnesota who are art caring a rental car called "Global Warming". Cool stuff, and we'll see more tomorrow!---- CLICK ON THE PHOTOS TO SEE MORE!!!

Art Car Caravan to Douglas- Day 1 of 6

DAY ONE

Who's on the trip?......

Philo & JoAnne & Jillian Northrup in "Daisy Singer"
Emily & Ken Duffy in the "Vain Van"
Marilyn Dreampeace in "Come Play With Me"
Shalom Compost in a wonderful-but-not-arted-yet Prius
Bob & Joy Castenada (Radio Flyer) in a plain white van
Jan Elftmann on a unicycle made entirely of corks
Kelly Lyles in a fur lined chariot of gold
Henry Van Horik and Andrea Dose  in "Devolution"

We left from San Jose around 11AM.  Only an hour later than our designated
departure time, which I think is a record to date! Six cars are starting off our caravan
that will go all the way to Douglas AZ by Thursday, Feb 23rd. We are going to
see property that has been purchased by Harrod Blank (Bay Area ArtCarFest
Organizer) and that will possibly be used as a sort of Art Car Haven/ Museum/
Sanctuary. A few Art Cars that are no longer in operation, or who are destined for
the museum life are being brought to Douglas to take up permanent residence.
This is very exciting as attempts have been made to create a No-longer-oporational
art car museum in the past, but none have lasted long. The land in Douglas has
people in the art car community really excited. The land is cheap enough that many
people are thinking of buying more land out there to create a full on Art Car Artist
retreat. Sounds good to me!

For the rest of the day we drove to Ventura, CA with a short stop at The Madona Inn (long enough to have the girls sneak into the men's bathroom and pee in the rock waterfall pee troff). Then back on the road for a food stop at ANDERSONS, home of the famous split pee soup. Im told the one we went to is the 'original'. Let me tell you that didn't make the food taste any better. And yes, I got the pee soup. ek. There were some great old googie signs around there though, and because of all the rain we saw a couple rainbows.

Now, as I post this, I am on a futon in a friend of a friend's house as the rain scared us away from out planned camping this night. Hopefully we will get far enough South tomorrow that there will be no more rain..... and warmer would be nice too. Not that I notice sitting in the back of Philo's modern heated Element. Unlike Henry and Andrea (driving Discordia) who have no heat! Apparently heat was an "option", and their car has no options. burrrr! Wouldn't really be an "option" for me.

The Red Party

Last night we had the first of a series of color themed cocktail parties. The first color was RED. Everyone brought red food, red drinks and dressed all in red. Some dressed to the nines and some more casual, but it was all RED, RED, RED- and it was fantastic! I had my photo studio set up and used the party as an opportunity to test out taking photos of people, something I had not used it for yet. Everyone had to have their photo taken as they came in the door. And, as every one looked absolutely fantastic dressed all in red, it was pretty easy to get good photos.
Only one person (my own Uncle!) defied the rules as dressed all in blue with a sign on his back that read: misinformed. That bastard. I was actually surprised to see that he was the only one to come up with a way to NOT to dress in red. I expect as the parties move on to more difficult colors there will be more of that.
We are planning on having one of these color themed parties every month, or so. This one was so much fun that we are definitely going to have a few more. What shall the next color be though?? Some people suggested green, or yellow..... Toast and i were talking about maybe doing GOLD. We shall see......
Check out the photos from the party! Click on the images below to see the whole set. I didn't take any out of the studio- i will make sure to do that next time. Let me know what color we should do next!

Playing with my new lights

So i finally got the chance today to play with my lights for a bit. I put a list together of objects ranging from human sized to tiny tiny sized things to photograph. I am very happy with my new strobes, though i still really like using hot lights for some things. Hotlights feel to me like painting or drawing, where strobes feel more like designing. You have to put some more for thought into the strobes, but you can do some really cool stuff in the end.
Oh- and i FINALLY took some nice photos of some Because We Can products, like lapdesks and a magazine/portfolio holder. I can't wait till next friday when i get to take photos of all people in RED at our Red Party!!
Till then, here are some photos of what i did today. Click on one to see the rest in Flicker.
