Office Lobby Design and Fabrication

Client: BackBone Entertainment
Mission: We need a front lobby that represents us and impresses our clients!
Services: Design and Fabrication of front lobby environment.

Backbone, a game design company, was expanding into a new space. The previous client offered to sell them their old normal reception desk for around $20k, a sadly typical cost for such an item. Backbone was a bit amiss, for they certainly didn't feel like that desk fit their style at all, and they certainly didn't want to spend that much on something they didn't love. This is where we came in. With our CNC-tools and in-house process, we proposed that we could give them an entire lobby for a little over half the cost of that single, boring reception desk.

After proposing several different game-centric designs, Backbone chose the design that was based upon their own newest hit game. The game has a very Gothic yet comic-book feel, mixed with a bit of deco and film noir influence. Also it's a lot of fun, for we got to play test it (a nice perk of having game designers for clients)! We carried these themes throughout the design of the lobby.

Backbone has a wonderful logo, and we really felt that it should be shown off in a modern, slick, yet somewhat-industrial way to fit with the theme of the lobby. The Logo on the wall is 4 feet wide by 6 feet tall and is back-lit with white neon, with a shiny brushed-aluminum face and finished steel trim around the edges. reception desk
The desk is about 10 feet long, with a lower adjustable and lit work-surface behind an imposing four foot high front. BBE desk
It's made from sustainably harvested Walnut plywood, and was made to go together quickly and easily. The interior frame is puzzle-like, and the whole desk is made from three large parts. The desk was inspired directly from the comic book that goes along with the computer game, for it belongs to one of the characters! The decorative wings on the front of the desk are also made from sustainable walnut. Carved by the CNC machine from a 3D model made in Blender, they are about two feet wide, making for a stunning addition to the front of the desk. routed_wing
The neon has a nice soft glow, adding to the Gothic feel of the theme and creates a dramatic backdrop for the logo and the desk. Sitting on the desk there in the photo is a custom hourglass we had made for the project, that says "To Backbone. Thanks for making my kid look good. -Death" on one side and has their logo on the other (This is very fitting if you have played their 'Death Jr.' game). neon logo
Backbone does a ton of games every year. They really wanted a place to show off all the boxes, toys, and awards from all the games that they have done in the last few years, so we came up with this salon-style display shelving. The display wall is made up of glass shelving with picture frames adhered to the front.
The sides of the shelves each have different designs integrating the company's logo cut into them as silhouettes. Each shelving is unique, some with the Companies' own artists drawings incorporated into the designs. BBE shelves
Because of our special tools and design process, we can quickly produce totally custom, wildly creative, one of a kind elements for a very reasonable cost. It also gives us great flexibility to work and collaborate with our clients to produce wonderfully creative pieces that fit their needs, wants, and personality (as well as their budgets). BBE shelves
