Selfishly Green

It has come up enough recently, that we wanted to document, (and have an easy place to point to) what makes our products "sustainable" or "green". So we have compiled this list .... with Pictures! ..... to better clarify the steps that we take in this environmental direction.

Custom Boxes for Attaboy's 20 Qwezshuns

We recently hooked up with Attaboy and made boxes for his "Qwezshuns", a collectible cast toy. This toy is even more collectible than his others as he is only making 20, they are all individually hand painted and come in a custom box that is also hand painted by Attaboy. You cant get much more collectible than that.

The Qwezshun sneaks a peek out of his box.....

Fluorescent Light Cozies

Tired of bland, white, office light fixtures? Knit yourself a Light Cozie!

Or, better yet, use a CNC routing table to make yourself a fleet of steam punk-y light cozies. That's what we did for the Three Rings Nautilus themed office space . Cause, well, we don't know how to knit.

3 people, 3 days, one deck.

Being summer time and living in beautiful sunny Oakland, we recently got a large shade structure to put in our yard to shield us from that blazing beauty in the sky. But once we had the shade structure up it was painfully obvious what was now missing. What was once just a plot of dusty dirt, was now crying out for a deck.

A DECK!

So we answered the call, and built a deck in three days.

American Flat mill is being demolished by the BLM

The old American Flat mill, an abandoned mill that once processed gold and silver ore about four miles out of Carson City has been abandoned for years, and is in the process of being demolished by the BLM.

American Flat

I first went there in 2001. It was an amazingly scenic place as the buildings, by that point, were just shells of what they once were, being reclaimed by the surrounding vegetation. The apparent numbers of visitors that had come through was seen through the years of graffiti coverage on almost every surface. Burned out shells of cars that had been a night's entertainment for some forgotten squatters, the countless beer cans and squatter encampments. American Flat Of course, all of these things that made it so wonderful are the same reasons it is being torn down.

American Flat

The American Flat is being completely demolished into the ground. The Steel and what ever else can be reclaimed will be hauled out. Every thing else will be buried, soil samples taken, and re-vegetation planting will begin. In a few years, it will look like it never existed. An area that had mining history dating back to 1859 will disappear. Though, understandably..... it was not a safe place. And with very easy access.

American Flat

American Flat The place was huge too. 45 acres of enormous buildings. Some as tall as 60 ft. Huge areas open to the sky and bowl shaped, used at some point for the refinery. Tunnels everywhere. Underground tunnels that traveled the area beneath the facility. And graffiti everywhere. Graffiti and puddles of water and plants determined to get in.

American Flat It was one of the most photogenic places i have ever been. So in memory of that beautiful place, I have uploaded all my photos from that trip to Flickr here .

Enjoy the photos. Bye Bye American Flat. I'm glad I saw you when I did.

Aluminum cutting for the distant future

The Long Now Foundation is a very cool non-profit organization that promotes long term thinking. So cool that Brian Eno is on the board of directors. They came to us through a friend, needing some aluminum carved for an ad campaign of theirs. We gladly stepped up to help!
We carved 4 large aluminum blocks with their desired text. Here you can see an example of one of them:

The lettering came out incredibly clean. A combination of using a new sharp bit, and very soft, light aluminum. The "v" carving also generally makes a very clean edge, and a great carved look!
Here is a close-up:

These pieces were made for an ad campaign where they were shot infront of Long Now's Millennium clock (a clock that they are making that will run for 10,000 years, no joke). They look very cool:
